uninsured motorist coverageAs  Providence RI attorney, I try to keep my ear to the local pulse. I find that keeping tabs on local Providence Rhode Island news helps me formulate blog posts that are relevant to the Providence community.

According to a report by the Providence Journal, Governor Chafee announced that he is still considering issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented residents living in Providence, RI.

I think most Providence RI attorneys would find this announcement very interesting.

Chafee’s announcement got me thinking about just how many unlicensed drivers are currently driving on our roads and highways. Any Providence RI attorney understands that unlicensed drivers = uninsured motorists.

While I have no political stake in the matter, I am concerned over the personal injury issues that arise when an uninsured or under-insured driver is involved in a Providence RI car accident.

Serious complications can arise when an uninsured or under-insured driver is involved in an auto accident. This is an issue that is very dear to me. As an attorney in Providence RI I consistently encounter these types of cases.

The life-long effects of an uninsured or under-insured motor vehicle crash can be devastating.

Providence RI Attorney | Why You Need Uninsured or Under-insured Motorist Coverage

As a Providence RI attorney, the following scenario scares the daylights out of me.

Imagine the following, real-life situation:

A young adult just starting out in life purchases a used vehicle. Since they are in a tough financial position, they decide to purchase the least expensive insurance policy possible. Purchasing the least expensive insurance policy possible, equates to them receiving a very small amount of financial coverage-should they ever be involved in an accident.

Keep in mind that because this person purchased the least expensive insurance policy possible (with the least amount of financial coverage), they most likely have very little personal assets of their own.

You on the other hand are covered by what you believe is a very comprehensive insurance policy. You may very well have $500,000 or more in liability limits. That’s wonderful because that will insure you if you hit someone else.

But what about when someone else hits you ? What if they don’t have insurance?

In moments like these any Providence RI attorney will hope and pray that you have enough uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage. Here’s why:

If someone without insurance or without enough insurance hits you, then your own policy will pay. Problem is that for some reason, many insurance agents fail to recommend that their clients carry a sufficient amount of uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage. Many people just don’t have enough uninsured motorist coverage on their policies.

This can leave you and your Providence RI attorney in a very difficult situation.

Since you do not carry enough uninsured motorist coverage, your Providence Rhode Island attorney must look elsewhere for money to cover your damages. Yet because you were hit by an uninsured or under-insured motorist, and because you do not have uninsured motorist coverage, there is no insurance policy for your Providence RI attorney to sue.

This leaves your Providence RI attorney with one option – to go after the assets of the person who hit you. However, since they have little or no insurance, you can bet that they do not have any significant assets.

This leaves you and your Providence RI attorney between a rock and hard place. There is just no money available to cover your damages.

Attorney Providence Rhode Island | Sad and Devastating Situations

These types of scenarios are always difficult and can be utterly devastating for the parties involved. Providence RI auto accidents can cause serious injuries that can bankrupt an individual and/or an entire family.

The best way to protect yourself from being involved in one of these sad situations is to purchase the most uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage you can afford. Fortunately this type of coverage is typically very affordable.

As a Providence RI attorney, I highly recommend that you take a look at your current insurance policy. Do you have enough uninsured motorist coverage to pay for damages following an auto-accident?

If you do not, then please take action and increase your coverage.

Unfortunately we can never forecast when we will be involved in a Providence RI car accident. These life altering events always occur when we least expect them to.

Take care and all the best,

Kevin
