How to Prevent Common Cycling Injuries

Of course, if you are struck by a two-ton vehicle on a bicycle, your chances of sustaining a serious injury are extremely high. However, short of driving safely and following all traffic signals, there are a few things you can do on your own to lessen the severity of your injury should you be injured in a bicycle accident:

  • Always ride with a bicycle helmet
  • Get good equipment by paying a bit more than you might think you need to on shoes, gloves and cycling specific shorts.
  • When riding at night or even at dusk, wear reflective clothing and an LED bike lantern
  • Position your saddle so you can place your foot on the ground easily should you need to make a sudden stop
  • Do not use bicycle toe clips, they restrict movement of your feet
  • Make sure your bicycle fits you properly for your height and weight – your local bike shop will be able to help you with this
